The Royal Tenenbaums (2001)
The Royal Tenenbaums
I entered this expecting a perfect movie. I experienced a perfect movie. It’s not surprising one bit, because Wes Anderson is, without a doubt, the King of Cinema. Across all his movies, this is one of the top ones where I felt the most emotionally invested. It did take me a few minutes to get into it, but once I did, it was just a rollercoaster until the very end. It has one of the most perfect combinations of comedy and drama I’ve seen in my life. I listed this as a drama, although it could’ve gone in the comedy category as well. By the end, I was just so shaken, in both a depressing and also happy way. Well, I don’t know if I would say depressing, but it just hits you right in the gut. It’s one of the most beautifully written movies I’ve ever seen in that sense. The way I was left feeling is unlike any other. I don’t think I can even describe how. I just feel empty, although I also feel very satisfied with the conclusion. You just have to see this for yourself to understand. The story adds so much complexion, but it’s still very understandable. It also does a good job of keeping a linear timeline (for the most part), and the time progression is good. Most of the characters were very relatable, and for me especially, Richie. Of course, everyone did a fantastic job, but Luke Wilson really embodies Richie, and he’s one of my favorite characters of all time now. Wes’ star studded casts always surpass expectations. My final note is how amazing the soundtrack was. There were some really great songs that amplified the writing and characters fantastically. Overall, this movie is perfect in every sense, and one I look forward to rewatching very, very soon. I’d highly recommend this to all dramedy fans. This film is officially Berry Approved, so go watch it now!
