Captain America: The First Avenger (2011)
Captain America: The First Avenger
I absolutely fell in love with Captain America after watching this movie. He’s just such a freaking beast, and I loved every second he was on screen. I loved the story throughout the movie, and it’s really nice not to have a superhero that’s set in the present day. Having the majority of the movie set during WWII was really awesome for the history buff that I am. Getting to watch someone fight Nazi’s is always fun for me, and this movie provides exactly that, along with the comic/superhero element. It felt a bit Indiana Jones-y to me, with a hint of Rambo and Wonder Woman thrown in there. Because of that, it made the movie even better, and it was very entertaining. This was also a really great origin story. I also knew that Steve got frozen in ice and was asleep for 70 years, but besides that, I’ve never known anything about his origin. Being able to watch it with a fresh mind was really nice, as well as interesting. Despite having a 2 hour runtime, this movie actually felt pretty short to me, but that’s because so much of it is filled with so much action and entertainment. The movie flowed together really nicely, which helps make it feel so smooth. The thing I love most about Captain America’s backstory is how after he was enhanced, the army used him as a promotional tool, instead of sending him out to fight. I like how they used him to capitalize the war efforts, as well as a propaganda tool. It’s a unique take on the use of a superhero, and it was cool to watch how he was almost worshipped by those around him. I enjoyed Red Skull as the main antagonist, and Hugo Weaving did a great job. Although he felt like your stereotypical cinematic Nazi general, he still had a awesome but evil attitude. Plus, his look was really cool. I also seriously loved how Howard Stark was in this. It’s cool and rare to see another superhero’s parent being directly used in a movie, and I thought it was a great idea to give more history to Tony’s dad. Howard also reminded me a lot of Howard Hughes, both in terms of physical looks, as well as certain characteristics. In fact, I wouldn’t be surprised at all if he was based on Howard Hughes himself. The score in this movie was fantastic, and it gives you the patriotic feel that many war movies might give you. It’s unique in its own way, and it has the superhero feel, as well as an American feel. Overall, this was a great movie, and I was entertained from beginning to end. I would highly recommend it to all superhero fans, and it provides a great origin story. This film is officially Berry Approved, so go see it now!
