Fruitvale Station
There’s a lot to unpack here. The first thing I want to open up with is that I am truly impressed with Ryan Coogler, this being his directorial debut. Despite only having five feature films, his filmography is already insanely impressive. Just the fact that it’s his first, and one of the most upsetting, gut wrenching films I’ve ever seen. That being said, I’m gonna try to keep this shorter than normal. Reason being, there’s so much depth and emotion, and I don’t want to try to get too deep into it. It stirs up so many feelings, and the film does a phenomenal job of portraying events as they happened, and providing commentary on a certain social issue. That’s all I’ll say on that. My heart is too heavy right now. Watching this the day after watching ‘Aftersun’ for the first time is not good for my soul. Anyways, the writing is beyond great, with effective dialogue and accurate representation of culture. The story, based on a true one, is…..haunting. It’s angering, disturbing, and sickening, and unfortunately, very little has changed. The entire cast was amazing, specifically Michael B. Jordan and Octavia Spencer for me. The two of them are so deep into their roles. Especially the last scene with Octavia. I’m gonna leave this here. I need time to process this. My last sentence is that this is chilling but needs to be seen by everyone. This film is officially Berry Approved, so go check it out now!
