Planes, Trains and Automobiles (1987)
Planes, Trains and Automobiles
Steve Martin and John Candy absolutely kill it in this movie. They are definitely one of the best movie duos I’ve ever seen, and they make it what it is. They do such a great job of being clumsy and accident-prone, all while still somehow keeping their heads on. I love how this movie is essentially one misfortune after another, which provides for some serious entertainment. There is constantly something always happening, and if you look away for just a minute, you’ll miss some kind of awesome moment. The story itself is great, and like I said, this is such an enjoyable movie. I love how it takes the classic “get home in time for the holidays” story, but this movie gives it a great spin. It keeps things fresh without feeling too dumb or stupid, which is a problem with some comedies. The thing I loved most about this movie was how even though it’s extremely comedic, there are some serious moments that really make you think. The majority of the movie is for laughs, but it ends on such a powerful and sympathetic moment, and I’m really happy it ended in the way it did. You never really think about what the current situation actually means for the characters, until you learn more about them. It’s hard to put into words what I’m trying to say, but this movie has a powerful message of love and friendship, as well as trust and honesty. Despite the serious topic, I was constantly laughing, and like I said, there is always a misfortune happening that is hilarious. This was also a great comedy because it wasn’t over the top, and it didn’t try to cram the comedic element down your throat. Steve Martin did a great job of being serious yet hilarious at the same time, and John Candy was absolute gold. I also really loved the Kevin Bacon appearance in the beginning, and I was so happy that he showed up. Even though it was for only one scene, it was still awesome. Overall, this is definitely one of my favorite holiday movies I’ve seen in recent years, as well as one of the funniest movies I’ve seen. I would highly recommend it, and it’s nice to have a movie to watch during Thanksgiving. This film is officially Berry Approved, so go watch it now!
