Abigail (2024)
Abigail
I had almost zero excitement for this movie, even after seeing the trailer several times at the theater. To be honest, the only two reasons I wanted to see this was because it starred Melissa Barrera and was directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin, who helped direct Scream (2022) and Scream VI. The movie actually wasn’t that bad, and though I don’t think it was as fun as people were making it out to be, it provides an entertaining experience. The biggest thing that stuck out to me was the goriness of it. It was very over the top which helps make the movie extremely enjoyable. All the exploding bodies and dark blood was fun. It’s definitely a horror movie that relies on gore rather than jump scares. The story wasn’t the best, though. I thought it felt very simple and almost cliche, and there weren’t any crazy twists or turns. I enjoyed learning about the characters and their backstories along the way, but the actual plot was a little too similar for me. The acting was good, much like the characters. Melissa Barrera is easily cementing herself as one of the best final girls in recent times. That goes for both this and the two Scream movies. Plus, Giancarlo Esposito is cool as always. Finally, I liked the score, and the use of the Swan Lake theme was haunting but also really gorgeous. Overall, this movie was pretty decent, but nothing insanely good. I enjoyed it for the most part, though I wasn’t a huge fan of the story, and a few minutes probably could’ve been shaved off. I’d recommend it to select horror fans, mostly if you like body horror and lots of gore.
