Dare I say that this is one of M. Night Shyamalan’s best pieces of work? I’d like to fight anyone who says different. Because this was good. Not anything phenomenal, but good. I did think a lot of the themes were similar to previous psychological thrillers like ‘Psycho’ or ‘Silence of the Lambs’. I’m not saying this was a copy of those, but the villains are similar, as well as similar situations. I think the best thing this movie does is (somewhat) relate itself to those past movies, while still being its own thing. I just used the words “movie” and “thing” way too much. But anyways, the plot is a little similar, but still keeps you sucked in and invested. Studying and seeing Kevin’s character(s) really puts you in the perspective of Casey, which helps it feel more real. Both her backstory combined with the current situation is a great telling to two tragic stories. There’s very little more I will say about the story for spoilers. It was one-of-a-kind while still giving you a vibe of movies in the past. The acting was extremely good, most especially from James McAvoy. His multiple portrayals are amazing to watch, with seamless transitions between personalities. It’s crazy how in some scenes you can hate him, and others, you feel really bad and almost sympathetic. Overall, this movie is very solid, and though nothing super duper impressive, it’s definitely one I would probably revisit. I’d also probably recommend it to most crime/thriller fans. Plus, a special guest from a previous movie makes an appearance at the very end, so keep your eyes open. This film is officially Berry Approved, so go check it out now!
