Insomnia (2002)
Insomnia
This was a super fun movie to watch, and one of the ones where I've been the most invested. I thought it was wonderfully made, with great writing, interesting characters, and some awesome performances. However, the biggest reason this doesn’t get an A is because it’s a remake of the Norwegian film of the same name. I’m not saying remakes are bad, but from what I’ve heard, it’s not too far different from the original. Therefore, I’m taking several points off the Movie Score, solely because this one isn’t entirely original. I’ve read that the plot is the exact same, and there’s only a few alterations. I thought it was still really well adapted, though. The story itself was very intriguing, and though there wasn’t a huge amount of twists or anything, there were several moments that really altered the plot. It was also really cool seeing the “hero” and “villain” almost help each other, but then both doing what they thought was right. The characters were well portrayed, with strong performances from Al Pacino and Robin Williams. I really enjoyed seeing Robin in a non comedic role. He executes his scenes so well, and is super convincing playing his character. Overall, this movie was well made, and though it wasn’t a super unique remake, I still very much enjoyed it. I’d recommend it to all crime/thriller/mystery fans. This film is officially Berry Approved, so go watch it now!
