The Piano Lesson (2024)
The Piano Lesson
I was really not aware of what I was getting myself into when I decided to watch this. I didn’t know much about it going into it, so everything was new to me. I assumed it was pretty much a historical drama, which it is, but there were a lot of key elements that I wasn’t ready for. The story goes deep into family drama and with an almost supernatural aspect that I totally loved. The way the film combines ancestry with some surreal bumps along the way was well done. Of course, I say all this about the film, when it’s been a play for a long time. So kudos to the original writer for coming up with this. The Washington boys (Malcolm, John, and Denzel) teamed up and really put it on the screen well. Malcolm directed, John starred, and Denzel produced, all bringing their A-game. I just enjoy seeing families making a film together. The characters in this were all great, no matter which ones you side with. The writing around them is awesome, adding depth to even the most quiet ones. The performances were strong, especially from John and Danielle Deadwyler. They bring so much personality and emotion very effortlessly, and very naturally. And it’s always cool to see Samuel L. Jackson show up. The score from Alexandre Desplat was very beautiful, powerful, and when needed, very spooky. He continues to be one of my all time favorites. Lastly, the cinematography was gorgeous, with colors that seem drabby but still provide enough warmth in the darkest moments. Overall, this film was great, and I was definitely invested. It’s nothing that sticks out award-wise, but still a solid watch that will be enjoyed by everyone who likes historical dramas (with a slight twist). This film is officially Berry Approved, so go watch it now!
