Fresh (2022)
Fresh
I’ve seen quite a lot of horror films, 282 to be exact. This one is definitely in, probably, the top 20ish of most disturbing I’ve seen. Personally, it wasn’t very disturbing compared to some of the things I’ve seen, but to the average viewer, it can definitely be scarring. The representation of human meat, both raw and cooked, is stomach churning, and there were definitely times where I just felt gross. Not physically, but definitely mentally and emotionally. Think about ‘The Silence of the Lambs’, when Hannibal Lecter did his little quip about liver, fava beans, and a nice chianti. Pretty much that quote is represented in this film, just in a different fashion. Like I said, it’s pretty gross. But weirdly awesome at the same time. Now the actual plot itself was very predictable, and didn’t really have any kind of twist. Exactly what I thought would happen basically happened, and there wasn’t anything new or “fresh” (pun intended). I loved the concept, it just doesn’t pull any kind of special tricks on you. But the performances were fantastic all around, especially from Sebastian Stan. Despite his crazy crimes, you almost can’t help but love him. I mean, not love him, but he’s so charming and you just want to hope that everything he’s done didn’t actually happen. Daisy Edgar-Jones was also really good. Overall, this film is well made, though the plot was very wimpy. Just think of this film as ‘The Silence of the Lambs’ meets ‘The Black Phone’ meets ‘Saw’. I’d recommend this to most horror/thriller fans, especially if you like the films I just mentioned. This film is officially Berry Approved, so go watch it now!
