Back to the Future (1985)
Back to the Future
This is one of the most memorable, infamous, and iconic sci-fi movies of all time. If you haven’t seen this movie, go watch it, because it’s quite literally a piece of history. It has such historical significance, in both cinema history, as well as science fiction history. The story is very fun, and though time travel sometimes feels overused, this one still has its own original feel. I like how the plot focuses on the effects of time travel, and though it’s not real, the dangers of learning or changing your own past or future. I also like how when Marty goes back in time, he has to change the actions he prevented, which is great entertainment for the viewer. The movie does a great job of keeping you glued in. It also does a good job of not getting you too confused. Normally with certain time travel movies, or shows like Doctor Who, you can get easily confused with all the time stuff. However, this one keeps it pretty straight, and you don’t get lost in the plot. The setting is great, and I love seeing a movie’s take on the 1950’s (when this one was set). The characters were pretty good, and though several of them were pretty obnoxious, they were still interesting. The acting from the protagonists were all great. Crispin Glover and Lea Thompson both do a good job of having a youthful, high school demeanor, though both were in their 20’s when filming. Michael J. Fox also does a good job, especially with his slightly quirky attitude when he goes to the past. Christopher Lloyd, however, is the highlight of the movie. His performance is quite memorable, as his eccentric take on a mad scientist is certainly one that will be remembered as one of the best. The music was great, and Alan Silvestri (who also did The Polar Express) gives the score a great science-y feel. Most of the effects are decent, except for a few. It was 1985, so it wasn’t anything crazy, but most were pretty impressive. I didn’t like the makeup at all used for the McFly parents, or old Biff. But, the cheesiness makes it awesome. Overall, you should definitely watch this movie, and even if you don’t like sci-fi movies, you should still see it to understand its cultural impact. This film is officially Berry Approved, so go see it now!
