Slither (2006)
Slither (2006)
I love James Gunn, I love his work, I love his style, and I’m excited for DC content to come. So, I decided to visit some earlier work. After seeing this, I can see some influence that it had on his DC work. Not just the familiar cast he usually has, but his use of science fiction with gross effects, and people in peril. It reminded me a lot of The Suicide Squad. Watch the two side by side, and you’ll see. I love how easy the story is, but James makes the most of it. What could’ve been a simple story of aliens who take over people’s bodies actually turned into a bloody disgusting movie with fantastic makeup and effects. Michael Rooker steals the show in this, although I do love me some Elizabeth Banks and Nathan Fillion. Everyone was great. Yes, there were some goofy moments, forced Southern accents, and stupid lines, but it all adds up to a fun time. I think my biggest dig at this is that there were definitely some times where I got a little bored. The scenes with Grant and the slugs were absolutely amazing, but some of the bits in between kind of lost me. Finally, the soundtrack was pretty great, and James Gunn continues to be a master of song selection. Overall, this movie had weak moments, but it’s pretty enjoyable. I think I’d like it better a second time, so I know I’ll revisit it in the future. I’d also recommend it to most horror/sci-fi fans.
