Kinds of Kindness (2024)
Kinds of Kindness
Yorgos Lanthimos strikes again with another gorgeous, and puzzling, film. This is the fourth movie of his that I’ve seen, and he continues the tradition of providing something ominous and suspenseful, while it’s still almost playful. This one has a different tone than the rest, and I think the actual filmmaking style is the reason. It’s not as oddballish as ones like ‘The Favourite’ or ‘Poor Things’, but it’s still very unique. The tone is a bit more serious, with a lot less fisheye lens, and it’s a very grounded movie. It’s a three part anthology, and though the three stories aren’t directly related, there’s still a very small connection between them all. Personally, it would’ve been cool to see them as a short film trilogy, rather than all packed together in an almost three hour runtime. I’m not complaining, because they were all really good, and it didn’t actually feel that long. But sometimes it’s nice to have a short break between stories. The writing was beautiful, and like I said, the stories were grounded while still making you feel uneasy and curious. I won’t say specifically what each one is about, but the main actors are in each one, playing a different character each time. I just loved that. It helps show the range of Jesse Plemons, Emma Stone, and Willem Dafoe. All three of them gave insanely fantastic performances, and for me, they are all Oscar worthy. Lastly, the score was extremely good, with great piano chords that provide suspense, and gorgeous vocal harmonies that contrast with the….interesting storylines. Overall, this movie was very well made, and I definitely enjoyed it. Sometimes it’s a little slow, but it’s still amazing. I’d recommend it to all drama fans. This film is officially Berry Approved, so go watch it now!
