The Elephant Man (1980)
The Elephant Man
I have great admiration for David Lynch, despite only seeing three of his films. I don’t think ‘Dune’ was super great, but the first time I watched ‘Eraserhead’ was one of the best movie experiences I’ve ever had. Now, upon seeing this, I’m starting to really get a sense of the kind of director he is, and I have many more great movies to go. Between the three I’ve seen, this one is definitely the most emotional and powerful. After finishing it, I was left with a feeling of loneliness and sadness. It was the kind of feeling that makes you feel empty, but in a good way. It leaves you in pain, a pain that hurts, but also feels good because you now understand the beauty of the movie. The story itself is simple, as it follows John Merrick and the events after he’s discovered by Dr. Treves. But many things happen, both positive and negative, that take you on an emotional rollercoaster. The scenes where Dr. Treves assists John with his vocabulary and daily life is heartwarming, and then on the flipside, the scenes where Merrick is harassed and assaulted by the townspeople is one of the most tragic things I’ve seen. John Hurt’s performance as Merrick was memorable and perfect, and helps add to the deep feeling. Despite all the makeup on his face, you can see his heart and innocence through the physical deformation. Absolutely amazing is what it is. He’s so fragile and lovable, and he’s treated so awfully. It hurts your heart, but it’s told beautifully. The cinematography was outstanding, with the black and white really coming into play. It sets the time and setting wonderfully, and I wouldn’t want it any other way. The score was extremely gorgeous, and helps push the story forward while adding a warm but sad mood. I don’t know how this movie was nominated for so many Oscars and didn’t win a single win. It’s one of the best movies I’ve seen in my life. Like I said, it’s sad, but so perfectly constructed that you can’t help but see the light in it. I’d definitely recommend it to everyone. This film is officially Berry Approved, so go watch it now!
