The Vanishing (1988)
The Vanishing (1988)
It’s been a long time since I’ve seen a movie that’s made me feel this way. It’s one of the best thrillers/mysteries that I’ve ever seen in my entire life. I can certainly understand why Stanley Kubrick said it’s the scariest film he’s ever watched. There was such an eerie, unsettling feeling from the very first second to the very last. The entire thing made me feel so uneasy and nervous, and my heart was definitely pounding in several scenes. The story was actually pretty simple, but the writing around the characters was absolutely insane, in the best way possible. Raymond Lemorne is one of the greatest characters I’ve ever seen, even though he’s basically a villain. The way Bernard-Pierre Donnadieu is able to channel both a good side and a bad side (that still seems like a good side) is amazing, and absolutely Oscar worthy. I can’t get over how awesome his performance was. I love how you basically know he was the abductor from the beginning, but you still spend time figuring out why he did what he did. Absolutely amazing. There’s so much more I want to say, but I don’t want to say anymore. It’s a movie you need to experience for yourself, and you should go in as blind as possible. Everyone needs to watch it before they die. This film is officially Berry Approved, so go check it out now!
