Planet of the Apes (1968)
Planet of the Apes (1968)
Upon seeing this, I now understand why it’s referred to as one of the greatest sci-fi movies ever made. It’s so cool how after over 50 years, this movie is still relevant, and still holds up. Watching it in 2024 is incredible. The use of makeup, practical effects, and props is what makes this so great. This one might seem lesser compared to the Apes trilogy of the 2010’s, if you’re looking at designs and visual effects. But I can imagine watching this in 1968, and I know my mind would’ve been blown. Yes, sometimes the apes look a little corny at times, and you can tell their mouths/lips don’t perfectly form words, but it’s still amazing. It gives the movie such an authentic, and honestly realistic, feel. You get put right into the center of everything. I loved the story, which was simple but also complex. The fight (both physical and mental) between man and apes is truly interesting. It makes me want to read the book. In that sense, I’m not sure how accurate this movie is to the book, but either way, it was really good. The acting was great, and the best part was how in a serious movie, there were still subtle hints of comedy. Roddy McDowall is awesome, and I love his quirky movements and the way he delivers his lines. That goes for Charlton Heston too. He’s definitely not comedic, and his serious stature and state of mind makes him the overpowering presence of the movie. Finally, Jerry Goldsmith’s score was one I will never forget. The hauntingly beautiful music has a great primal sound, and helps you understand where you are and what’s happening. Overall, this movie is extremely well made, and it has one of the best endings of all time (special shoutout to Rod Serling). I’d recommend this to all sci-fi fans. This film is officially Berry Approved, so go watch it now!
