Death of a Unicorn (2025)
Death of a Unicorn
Despite this film falling just a little bit flat, it’s still decently entertaining and a lot more gruesome than I was anticipating. The whole thing is pretty much what you’d expect, in terms of genre and plot. There was nothing mind blowing or amazing, and it was extremely predictable. It was very easy to follow along with, and as the film progressed, basically everything I thought would happen, did happen. From that aspect, it could definitely be boring for some. For me, I was very much enjoying it. The kills were absolutely awesome, and as I said, much more gruesome than expected. I mean, one of the characters was literally torn in half because of a unicorn tug-of-war. How cool is that? The horror also blended really well with the comedy. There were several moments where I audibly gasped from shock, and also many moments where I laughed out loud. It’s hard to beat a good dark comedy. The story also used good themes of greediness and capitalism. The performances were alright, nothing special. Paul Rudd and Jenna Ortega were solid, but for me, Will Poulter was absolutely in control of the spotlight. His line deliveries were flawless, and I wouldn’t have objected to more screen time from him. Lastly, the unicorn designs were really great. I loved how they weren’t over the top, and honestly seemed pretty realistic. They were big, gruff, menacing, and absolutely epic. But when it mattered most, they were gentle and sweet, and you find yourself rooting for them for pretty much the entire time. Overall, this film was solid, though it definitely has some flaws. But it’s still fun, and my love for A24 only grows more. I’d probably recommend it to most dark comedy fans.
