EuroTrip (2004)
EuroTrip
I actually enjoyed this a lot more than I thought I would. I’m usually a fan of 90’s/2000’s comedies, and with this one being from 2004, it’s got the exact vibe that every good 2000’s comedy should have. When it comes to humor, I usually like parodies, physical comedy, and witty dialogue (like Police Squad!). This film is a good combination of all three of those. It’s definitely over the top, but it doesn’t beat you over the head with it. It definitely aligns with my sense of humor. The story and characters make this feel a lot like the Vacation series. It literally just follows a group of friends as they hilariously travel across Europe, constantly getting into unfortunate predicaments. The pacing was pretty nice, and I never got bored. Usually with comedies (for me, at least), there’s always some scenes that completely fall flat, but this one stays very consistent. It constantly moves forward while keeping the humor lively. Granted, most of it is extremely stupid and very goofy. But isn’t that the point? I would agree it’s not the most well made, but the laughs hit hard. It’s interesting too, because I’m usually not a fan of risque humor. But all the scenes and jokes in this didn’t really bug me at all. Maybe because they’re actually funny. The cast does a good job, though nothing stands out. I enjoyed the unknown cast, which makes the film feel more authentic and personable. The cameos from Matt Damon and Fred Armisen are also iconic and amazing. And finally, the soundtrack hits really hard, with some fantastic song choices that authenticate the time period and mood, and of course, “Scotty Doesn’t Know”. Overall, this film definitely isn’t a masterpiece, but it’s refreshingly funny with memorable characters, great locations, awesome music, and is subtle yet on the nose. I’d recommend it to most comedy fans.
