Child’s Play (1988)
I’ve been meaning to watch this for literal years now, and I’m finally glad I did. It wasn’t anything mind blowing, but it’s still iconic, so I’m happy I can say I’ve seen it. There’s just something awesome about 80’s horror (especially when they’re campy), and this is exactly that. It definitely has its serious moments, but sometimes it feels goofy as well (in a fun way). I mean, it’s about a talking doll who kills people. What’s better than that? I don’t think the writing was necessarily the best, but it works out in the end. The story was good, although the beginning and the scene with Dr. Death doesn't make too much sense for this kind of movie. It helps explain certain events, but it makes it feel too out there for me. However, besides that, I don’t have a whole lot of other complaints. I think there were definitely a couple slow-ish moments, but I love the runtime. It’s just under 90 minutes, so it gets straight to the point and doesn’t waste time. I absolutely loved that, and more movies need to do it. The acting was decent too, although some of the dialogue was just plain awkward. There were some lines and scenes that felt off, but hey, it was the late 80’s. I really loved the special effects and puppet work. Because they didn’t use CGI for Chucky, it felt SO much more realistic. Plus, burnt Chucky is actually kind of terrifying. Overall, this movie was fun, even though there’s definitely some room for improvement. I’d definitely recommend this to horror fans. This film is officially Berry Approved, so go watch it now!
