Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives
Hey look, an actual somewhat decent Friday the 13th installment! I mean, the first two are great, but after they fall off. However, this one definitely helps pull them out of the gutter. Now it’s not the best movie ever made, but it was a significant step up. It actually felt like what these kinds of movies are supposed to feel like. Was it cheesy? Yes. Was it corny? Yes. Did it feel like a cheap 80s horror flick? Absolutely. But was it fun? You bet your life it was. I still like the first two the best, but this one is definitely closer to the top than others. It brings the franchise full circle, and I would’ve been very happy if the series ended with this movie. It obviously doesn’t, but it works in a way where they could’ve. The setting makes it feel like the first two, which gives it a tiny bit of an edge. Most of it does feel very cliche (in terms of similarities to the previous movies), and at times, it almost feels like a spoof or comedy. The campy feel (pun intended) didn’t work very well. You go from some serious movies to this one, so the tone felt off. However, the final 30ish minutes bring back the dark feeling of dread and terror that it should've been like for the entire movie. The characters also didn’t always feel super serious. We get to see the third actor to play Tommy, and the personality shift from the 5th to 6th movie was awful. But Jason takes the spotlight, so it doesn’t matter. Overall, this movie isn’t the greatest of the franchise, but still fun and (somewhat) refreshing. I’d probably recommend it if you like cheesy slasher movies.
