Son of Frankenstein (1939)
Son of Frankenstein
There’s something about these old Frankenstein movies that are just so addicting. I think this one is actually my favorite of the three Karloff Frankenstein movies, which is funny because not a lot of people have heard of this. Classic horror fans probably have, but when people mention Frankenstein, nobody mentions the seemingly random one with Basil Rathbone. It’s interesting how this movie lays out its plot, because it’s extremely similar to the previous two Frankenstein’s. However, even though it’s similar, it still feels completely different. I love how you get to see Frankenstein’s descendant, rather than Dr. Frankenstein himself. Basil Rathbone is an amazing actor, and he certainly shows it in this. I’ve seen him in Robin Hood about a million times, so to see a new role was refreshing. He can channel any emotion he needs, and he’s perfect. Also, seeing Karloff as Frankenstein’s monster one last time was awesome. After seeing this movie, he certainly shows why he’s the definitive Frankenstein. I still like Peter Boyle the best, but Karloff stands above all others. Plus, it was also nice to see Bela Lugosi again. The team of Rathbone, Karloff, and Lugosi is above all others. The special effects and makeup in this were extremely good as well. I’m so impressed with how everything (including the sets) were put together. Especially for 1939. Lastly, the score was haunting and creepy, with some great string sections. I will say there were a couple scenes that felt a little but unneeded, and some of the acting was a tiny bit stale, and you can certainly see why Mel Brooks spoofed the three Karloff Frankenstein’s. But that’s besides the point. Anyways, I’d definitely recommend this to all classic horror fans. This film is officially Berry Approved, so go watch it now!
