The Killing of a Sacred Deer (2017)
The Killing of a Sacred Deer
This is my third Yorgos experience, and he is definitely becoming more and more intriguing. His style is so distinct and so uncomfortable, but in all the best ways. Besides this one, I’ve seen ‘The Favourite’ and ‘Poor Things’, and of those three, this one made me the most uneasy. From start to finish, there is such an unsettling vibe, where you know something is wrong, but you can never figure out what it is. So many weird things kept happening, and I had a blast trying to figure out why, and I never could get it. It almost felt like a Twilight Zone episode, but very over the top and edgy. The story was written so beautifully, to the point that it even made Colin Farrell nauseous when he read the script. I can understand why. There isn’t anything too graphic, it’s just the whole mood. I do have some love/hate feelings with the acting, though. I thought it was extremely forced and almost made me laugh a few times. The dialogue was good, but it stuck out. However, it helps elevate the psychological side of the movie, which was good. The line deliveries were what helped give me the very uncomfortable feeling I had. The score was amazing, with many loud blasts of sound that accent the gravity of each scene. It was also very subtle at times, just enough to give you the creeps. I think this movie just barely misses being a 9/10, mostly because of the acting and the horrible (yet amazing) vibe. But the subtext and writing is perfect. Yorgos, you’re awesome. I’d recommend it to all psychological horror/thriller fans. This film is officially Berry Approved, so go check it out now!
