Signs (2002)
Signs
I think this was one of the most perfectly rated movies I’ve seen. When I say that, I mean that it’s not underrated, and it’s not overrated. It’s perfectly rated. I met all my expectations, but didn’t necessarily excel them. From what I’ve seen from M. Night Shyamalan’s films, this is one of my favorites, but that doesn’t say much, cause I’ve only seen a few of his movies. I thought he did a good job with this. It was a (somewhat) easy to understand plot, from the outside. It seems like it’s just about aliens and whether they’re hostile or not. However, it goes much deeper than that. The movie does a great job of portraying a man who’s lost his faith, and he finds strength in his family (and himself) to gain it back. From a writing standpoint, it was pretty good. The depth of the characters was nice. But, there were definitely a couple scenes that felt a bit cheesy, with some dialogue that’s slightly cringey. I did like the comedy, though. There were some really good one liners throughout the movie, so you get a small break to laugh throughout the serious plot. Some of the special effects were good, while some were…questionable. Yeah, it was 2002, but still. It wasn’t horrible. Just nothing that stood out. Overall, this movie was pretty good, with a couple scares (that birthday party scene is iconic), and an intriguing, serious, yet still sometimes humorous plot. I can see myself watching this again in the future, and I’d recommend it to most sci-fi/horror fans. This film is officially Berry Approved, so go check it out now!
