The Fly (1958)
The Fly (1958)
I’ve been waiting a while to watch this, and I’m finally glad I did. It didn’t grip me as much as I thought it would, but it was still great, especially the last several minutes. This is more of a slow burn movie, where you don’t see the good stuff until much later in. I mean, the whole movie was good, but it gets better as it goes on. I like how the story opens up with the ending, but then fills you in on everything that happened. I liked the pacing and just the general structure. It slowly builds up, then really gets you at the end. It’s a little cheesy, but still enough to leave me very impressed. The characters weren’t really all the best, though the acting was solid. I didn’t really feel drawn to anyone, except for Vincent Price, but that’s because he’s Vincent Price. The design of Andre’s fly head was cool too, and actually looked pretty good and not super goofy. You can obviously tell it’s fake, but it still feels somewhat realistic. And the spider scene was absolutely awesome. A bit silly, but absolutely awesome. Overall, this movie was well made, with some fun suspense and a great conclusion. The first half does feel a little slow, but it all leads up to some fun science-y thrills. I’d recommend it to most fans of classic horror/sci-fi. This film is officially Berry Approved, so go watch it now!
