• I had some skeptical thoughts going into this, because you know how sequels go. Especially when they try to ride the success of the original. In a few instances, that’s the case for this film. Let’s start with the cons. I definitely felt like this film was a duplicate of the first one, besides a few plot changes. There were new characters and new villains, but the overall story felt about the same. The film did feel like it was made just because it could, as it doesn’t really add anything to the storyline of the duology, or to Moana or Maui’s character arcs. I guess from a writing standpoint, it was kind of whatever. But that’s really the only big negative thing that stuck out to me. Besides that, the film was very entertaining to me, and I loved it. Not as good as the first, but it was still great. I love the characters of Moana and Maui, so seeing them team up again is really cool. The animation was good once again, as well as fantastic visuals and color. I don’t think it was as prominent this time as it was in the first film, but it was still all very eye-catching. The music also wasn’t as memorable as the first film, but there were still a couple songs that were catchy and stuck out to me. The best one was definitely ‘Beyond’. I really liked it, and it’s totally on my playlist now. Overall, this film was definitely a step down from the first, and there are noticeable flaws, but I was thoroughly entertained and I quite enjoyed it. I’ve read lots of negative reviews, but some people just need to learn to have fun while at the cinema. I’d recommend this to most animation/musical fans.
