Dahmer - Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story

  • This show is definitely a bit overrated, and though it was very intriguing, the entire structure of the show isn’t super great. It’s a bit confusing, I don’t think it flows together very well. Each episode was almost like a standalone story, which didn’t make sense for this topic. I’ve always been a huge fan of true crime, so that element of this show was good. But, only the last few episodes really make sense story-wise. Each episode was just a snippet of maybe Dahmer’s past life or one of his killings, and it doesn’t really tell his story in a chronological way (at least until the end). Because of all that, it made some of the show a bit boring and confusing. Most of it was entertaining, although if you’re sensitive to serial killer stuff, then this show definitely isn’t for you. I thought it did a good job of showing pieces of Dahmer’s life, it just wasn’t shown in the best way. The acting was pretty good all around, and though I never got attached to any of the characters, I enjoyed their performances. Obviously, Evan Peters was the standout performance, which actually won him a Golden Globe. Physically, he’s a great match, and emotionally, he does a good job of being a total nutjob. Every time he’s on screen, it’s very unsettling, and he brings a creepy vibe to each episode. One thing I really liked was the portrayal of John Wayne Gacy in the end of the series. I’m not sure why he was shown, because it didn’t add literally anything, but it was still cool to see. I also love seeing (what I guess you could call) Dahmer’s spiritual awakening in prison. It shows several things that aren’t often talked about when it comes to Dahmer. The show also does a good job of showing the problems of underprivileged people in the time when everything went down. Overall, this show was decent, and definitely could’ve been done better. But, it was still good, and I hope to see more of this type of series in the future. We’ve already seen John Wayne Gacy, so maybe him getting a series, or Ted Bundy, would be cool. I would recommend this to true crime fans, but if you don’t like that stuff, then definitely don’t watch it. It’s definitely disturbing, but still interesting. It’s not Berry Approved, but you should check it out.
